How to Measure for a Blouse at Home
A step-by-step guide to taking accurate blouse measurements at home: bust, waist, shoulder, armhole, sleeve, length and neck depths.
Accurate measurements are the biggest factor in a blouse that fits well. You only need a soft measuring tape and a helper.
Quick answer
Wear a well-fitting inner garment, stand straight, keep the tape snug but not tight, and measure bust, waist, shoulder, armhole, sleeve length, blouse length and front and back neck depth. Measure twice.
What you need
- A soft tape measure
- A well-fitting, non-padded inner garment
- A helper, a pen and paper
Step by step
- Bust: wrap the tape around the fullest part of the chest, keeping it level at the back.
- Under bust: measure directly under the bust.
- Waist: measure the narrowest part of your torso.
- Shoulder: measure across the back from one shoulder edge to the other.
- Armhole: measure around the top of the arm.
- Sleeve length and round: measure from the shoulder to your preferred sleeve end, then around the upper arm.
- Blouse length: measure from the shoulder over the bust to where the blouse should end.
- Front and back neck depth: measure from the neck down to the lowest point you want the neckline.
Common mistakes
- Measuring over a padded bra
- Pulling the tape too tight
- Letting the tape slope at the back
- Measuring alone
