Blouse Armhole Too Tight — Causes and Fixes
A tight armhole is usually caused by an armhole cut too small or too high, and it can often be fixed by re-cutting the armhole or letting out the seams if there is enough allowance.
Depends on the seam allowance · Updated
A tight armhole restricts movement and leaves marks on the arm. It is one of the most common blouse complaints.
Likely causes
- The armhole was cut smaller than the arm measurement.
- The armhole sits too high under the arm.
- The sleeve is wider than the armhole opening and pulls the seam.
- The fabric has little stretch and no room for movement.
How it is fixed
- Re-cut the armhole slightly lower and wider, if the fabric and seam allowance permit.
- Let out the side and shoulder seams to give extra room.
- Re-set the sleeve so it sits without pulling.
Can it be altered?
Often, but it depends on how much fabric was left in the seams. A fitting shows what is possible before any cutting.
Prevent it next time
Give an armhole measurement and sleeve round when you order. See the measurement guide, and ask for a trial fitting.
