Blouse Neckline Gaping or Sagging — Causes and Fixes
A gaping neckline is usually fixed by taking in a small dart at the neckline, adding a facing or stay tape, or reshaping the neckline to lie flat.
Usually can be altered · Updated
A neckline that gaps or sags looks untidy and can expose more than you intended.
Likely causes
- The neckline is cut too deep or too wide.
- The neckline edge stretched during stitching or wear.
- No facing, lining or stay tape supports the edge.
- Curved or deep necklines were cut without shaping for the body.
How it is fixed
- Add a small dart at the neckline to remove extra fabric.
- Stitch stay tape around the neckline edge to stop it stretching.
- Add a facing or lining so the edge lies flat.
- Reshape the neckline slightly higher if the design allows.
Can it be altered?
Usually yes, especially with a dart or stay tape.
Prevent it next time
Give the front and back neck depth when you order and check the neckline at the trial fitting. See the blouse design library for necklines and how each is cut.
