Blouse Back Gaping — Causes and Fixes
Back gaping is usually caused by a back neck or back width that is too loose, and it can normally be fixed by taking in darts, the centre back seam or the neckline.
Usually can be altered · Updated
When the back of a blouse stands away from the body, it looks untidy and can slip off the shoulder.
Likely causes
- The back neck is cut too wide or too deep.
- The back width is too generous for your shoulders.
- A deep back opening is not shaped to your back curve.
- The fabric has stretched or relaxed with wear.
How it is fixed
- Take in the centre back seam or add a back dart.
- Reshape the back neckline and add a facing or lining so it lies flat.
- Add an inner support strip or a fixed hook on deep backs.
Can it be altered?
Usually yes. Taking a blouse in is easier than letting it out, so back gaping is one of the more straightforward fixes.
Prevent it next time
Give the back neck depth and shoulder width when you order, and check the back in the trial fitting. See how to measure for a blouse at home.
