Blouse Too Tight at the Bust — Causes and Fixes
A blouse that is tight at the bust can be let out only as far as the seam allowance permits, so the earlier you check, the more options there are.
Depends on the seam allowance · Updated
A blouse that pulls across the bust creates drag lines, makes the hooks strain and limits breathing.
Likely causes
- The bust measurement was taken too snugly or without ease.
- The fabric has little stretch.
- Your size has changed since the blouse was made.
- The bust darts are placed too high or too low.
How it is fixed
- Let out the side seams and bust darts for extra room.
- Add a panel at the side or back if there is matching fabric.
- Reshape the darts so the fabric moves to where it is needed.
Can it be altered?
Only as far as the seam allowance permits. If there is not enough, the most reliable fix is to have a new blouse made to measure.
Prevent it next time
Measure over the bra you will wear and add ease. A trial fitting lets the fit be adjusted before the blouse is finished. Check your size with the size calculator.
